| Jane Applegate, owner of The Applegate Group, interviewed me Friday, April 20, for an upcoming segment on Cox TV. The focus is on small businesses and their issues. As the president of NAWBO-SEVA, she had asked me to speak on the resources NAWBO has to offer our members. I was so enthusiastic as I was talking to her, I want to reiterate some of the resources I mentioned. To begin, NAWBO-SEVA is a great sisterhood. Women love to help one another and it is our pleasure to help prevent someone from having to “reinvent the wheel”. We are here to build relationships. We all know the best way to build our business is through relationships. We offer networking opportunities. Almost every meeting we have an educational program bringing in a speaker to talk on a topic of current concern and/or interest to women business owners. We offer mastermind groups where women break up into small groups, meet on a regular basis, and help each other with their biggest obstacles. I also brought out that, since we are a National organization, we have the ability to connect with other successful business women throughout the country; we also have a presence on Capitol Hill.
Ms. Applegate also asked what business trends I saw in the businesses women begin and grow in Southeastern Virginia. I let her know that we have women that represent almost all professions and the trend I see is that women are no longer concerned about what they should be doing. Rather they are going after their passion. We live in a time where there are no boundaries other than those we create in our own mind.
As you can tell, I believe we are the best organization a woman business owner has available in this area and I hope you all will make an extra effort to invite another woman business owners to share the value.
Looking forward to seeing you all on May 16.

Sally Kocen President, NAWBO SEVA

| Peggy Sijswerda Honored as a Woman of Courage, Confidence and Character
Each year, Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast honors a select group of women who have achieved success in their professional lives, supported Girl Scouting and have worked to improve the lives of girls and women in the community. In a world that still presents barriers to a girl in developing her leadership qualities, the achievements of these women being honored today, and their high visibility, set a powerful example. Their successes are inspiring to girls, encouraging them to aim for excellence. That is what the Girl Scout Leadership Experience is about – helping each girl develop to her full potential and become a competent, resourceful woman.
Peggy Sijswerda was born in Norfolk and has lived in southeastern Virginia Beach for more than forty years. She has BS in English from Radford University, an MA in English and a MFA in creative writing from Old Dominion University. Peggy has been publishing magazines in the region since 1990, when she and her husband, Peter, began publishing Tidewater Parent, which they sold to the Virginian-Pilot in 1997. Two years later Peggy and Peter began publishing Tidewater Women, a magazine designed to celebrate local women as well as inform, entertain, and inspire them.
When not sitting in her publisher chair at Tidewater Women, Peggy also freelances for a variety of regional and national magazines. Her work has appeared in publications such as Parents, Stars and Stripes, Endless Vacations, and Virginia Living. In 2010, Peggy’s memoir was published to local acclaim. Still Life with Sierra tells that story of her family’s journey back to happiness after Peggy’s two-year old daughter died in a drowning accident in 1990.
Peggy is president-elect of the local chapter of NAWBO, National Association of Women Business Owners, and a Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast community partner. |
